History
🕊️ Overview
Bayside Cemetery is Sturgeon Bay’s largest and oldest active cemetery, located along Bay Shore Drive, overlooking the waters of Sturgeon Bay. Established in the mid-19th century, it serves as the final resting place for many of the area’s early settlers, community leaders, and veterans from nearly every major American conflict since the Civil War.
🏛️ Early History (1850s–1900s)
- Founding: The cemetery was originally established in 1865, around the end of the Civil War, coinciding with Sturgeon Bay’s early development as a shipbuilding and trading community.
- Organization: It was organized by local citizens as a private, non-denominational burial ground to replace smaller family and church cemeteries scattered throughout the county.
- Location Choice: The site was chosen for its gently rolling landscape and scenic view of the bay — symbolic of peace and rest. Its proximity to the city made it accessible but still removed from the bustle of downtown.
- Early records note burials being transferred from smaller nearby cemeteries as Sturgeon Bay grew.
⚓ The Maritime and Pioneer Connection
Door County’s history is deeply intertwined with the Great Lakes shipping industry, and Bayside Cemetery reflects that heritage:
- Many shipbuilders, sailors, and captains are buried here, some with stones engraved with sailing motifs or anchors.
- The cemetery also includes graves of Norwegian and Belgian immigrants, whose families helped settle Door County.
- Several prominent local families — such as early political figures, lumbermen, merchants, and farmers — have family plots dating back more than 150 years.
🪦 Veterans and Memorials
Bayside Cemetery is noted for its extensive collection of veterans’ graves:
- There are marked graves for soldiers from the Civil War, Spanish–American War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and later conflicts.
- Each Memorial Day, community ceremonies are held to honor the veterans interred there.
- A Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) section commemorates Civil War soldiers, and veterans’ flags are placed each year.
🌳 Landscape and Features
- The cemetery spans over 30 acres of gently undulating grounds, shaded by mature oak and maple trees.
- The historic chapel and caretaker’s house, built around the early 1900s, still stand and reflect local architectural styles of the period.
- Roads and pathways are arranged in a grid typical of Victorian-era cemetery planning.
- The entrance gate and signage have been updated through various community preservation efforts.
🧭 Modern Era and Preservation
- Today, Bayside Cemetery is still active and maintained by a non-profit association, funded through lot sales and donations.
- Restoration efforts in recent decades have included:
- Cleaning and straightening historic marble and limestone headstones
- Digitizing burial records for genealogical research
- Tree and landscape renewal programs to preserve its park-like setting
- It remains a popular site for local historians and genealogists, offering valuable insights into Door County’s settlement patterns and maritime past.
📜 Notable Burials
While not all records are digitized, several noteworthy individuals are known to be buried there:
- Early Door County founders and officials
- Veterans of the Union Army
- Ship captains and local craftsmen from the 19th century
- Community philanthropists and educators who helped shape Sturgeon Bay’s civic institutions
